$ 50.00
Radisson Hotel / Center of New Hampshire
Level: Everyone

Join us for our usual Friday Night Dinner with an outer space slant to it. Jean Wright will be our Special Guest Speaker and fill us in on her love for sewing, quilting, and the Space Shuttle Program...... and how she tied these three loves together.

"Like a celestial Etsy project, the Space Shuttles flew into space protected by quilts hand sewn by a seamstress who bought her sewing supplies at JoAnne Fabrics. These were not grandmotherly quilts meant to keep the astronauts cozy during the shuttle program’s 135 flights, by the way. Instead, the high-technology blankets that Jean Wright and her group of 25 “Sew Sisters” hand-stitched to the orbiters were part of the shuttle’s essential Thermal Protection System (TPS) that kept the orbiter cool during re-entry. Without the TPS, which included a variety of special thermal tiles, the world’s first space planes would have burned to space ash during re-entry when temperatures outside their fragile metal skins could reach 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

“In private, we called ourselves the ‘Itch, Stitch and Bitch Club,’ ” Wright said. “That fabric was really itchy.” Wright’s little-known story of the shuttle seamstresses — women more accustomed to making wedding dresses, quilts, and letting out a pair of pants than working from patterns designed by aerospace engineers — is an intriguing bonus from a visit to the Atlantis exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center." Excerpted from the Palm Beach Post, July 2013

$50 per person

Has MQX Gone to the Birds? Well, Maybe!

December 2, 2017
The Year of the Birds!  We hope you all had a relaxing, happy Thanksgiving.  We're noticing a 'bird' theme to a number of the classes offered at MQX New England this spring. We're not sure how that happened but these birds sure are really pretty and oh so ...
