Everyone has gotten to the end of a quilt pattern and read with dread the words Quilt as Desired. What exactly does this mean. This class will talk about different ways to quilt your quilts. What quilting patterns compliment piecework vs. applique, straight lines vs. curves. We will also discuss quilting density, which type of thread to use and ways to plan out your quilting with minimal marking. Please bring your trouble tops to class and we will try and talk about how to quilt as many as possible. There will be lots of drawing and design in this class .

As a long arm quilter you are the embodiment of the phrase that is at the end of every pattern whether you quilt only for yourself, family, charity or as a professional quilter for the public – quilt as desired. So how do you choose to quilt a top? What direction do you load it? To float or not to float? What batting and thread are you choosing? How are you choosing the design? Are you treating the top as one piece or quilting each section individually? Do you mark the whole top or do you put it on and wing it? Come explore different ways to get inspiration for quilting designs that are easy to accomplish. M139-17 A is for Applique, 2 Part Class
Don't let quilts with applique scare you away! This 2-part (3hr lecture/design & 4 hr longarm hand's-on) class uses lecture time to discuss threads, battings, tools. I will also teach my award-winning design techniques for creating a quilting plan for each applique piece. In the hand's on, you will learn marking methods, tips for creating the appliquéd masterpiece (without any stress or tears!). Each student will receive their own floral applique piece. This is a design & longarm quilting class which utilizes an applique top as the vehicle.

M147-17 Discover the Ghost Block
Let’s discover the block within your block. Creating alternate quilting spaces within a quilt can take a quilt from the ordinary to the extraordinary. These spaces add motion, direct the eye in a quilt and can soften quilts that have a lot of hard lines. I will teach you how to create these spaces and designs to quilt within them. We will look at pieced areas as well as large background spaces. I will show you how to design feathers and combine them with stencils or other designs to fill in these spaces to enhance the quilt to another level.

Are you intimidated by your long arm? Does it sit in your space mocking you? You thought you would be best friends—you even gave it a special name….. You may have purchased your machine from your dealer and taken the startup class but you are still hesitant. Maybe you bought your machine second hand and feel like there is no one to help. Your foe will soon become your friend or at the least your frenemy. You will learn how to load your backing fabric, add batting and secure the top and basic quilting techniques. Discussions on thread types, tension issues, rulers, and other topics will be covered. But most of all you will leave the class with confidence in what you can accomplish.

Go beyond the straight line and use your free-motion quilting skills to their fullest. In this workshop, students will learn how to turn basic shapes into linear free-motion quilting designs.

If you have ever wondered what to put into the middle square of that star block then this class is for you. I have been quilting many designs that fit into squares, triangles and rectangles that will attach to other continuous curve in your blocks. This class is beyond the basic continuous curve, it is all about filling the spaces with design but still getting around the whole block with one stop and start . There are over 25 free-motion designs for just a square alone. These designs will add spice to the ordinary continuous curve without adding a lot of time.

Students will work with vintage textiles and a jelly roll to create Improv Log Cabin blocks. These can then be set in a variety of ways to create your own version of a Modern Log Cabin. The workshop is packed full of tips for working with vintage textiles and ways to showcase these treasured pieces. You will learn many ways to do a block with continuous curve, loops, twists, curls, stencils, feathers, etc. With little marking or stops and starts you will quilt your way around the block and home again. I will also show you how to connect blocks and all your quilting on a quilt to make your quilting time more productive. We will discuss many ways to quilt traditional quilts and various blocks. You will be able to tackle that next sampler with a lot of design ideas.

You will be sewing instead of painting in a numbered fashion/order. Nancy appeared on Love of Quilting pbs tv show, episode 2804 demonstrating how to make the block. Learn twelve different ways to dye pattern by twisting, wrapping, sewing, pleating and sliding the fabric onto poles. Translating to "Storm", Arashi Shibori is a versatile fabric dyeing method used to create beautiful organic textures, ranging from lightning to water to trees. In this full color class we will learn to make "dyepaint", and explore the differences with thin and thick dye along with several other shibori techniques! *As this is a technique intensive class you will receive a pre-class assignment that will include cutting and labeling your fabric, and running a few seams.

M451-17 It's All in the Ruler
I have been having a blast with all the new rulers that I have developed in the last year. Let me share with you all the fun. I will show you how to use rulers and the trick to holding them and lining them up correctly. Along with the straight edge tools I will also show you how to use the boomerangs for curved crosshatch. The circle busters and hearts guides allow you to make perfect circles and hearts without crossing your hands and then add freemotion for more design opportunities. The Rope-a-dopes make great rope designs with a corner trick that makes it perfect each time. It also all started with the appliguide which I will show you how to use to go around your appliqués smoothly. Along with instruction there will be samples and many designs that go beyond the basic use of guides.
