Midwest 2016
Special Exhibits

MQX Midwest is pleased to have the following special exhibits for your viewing pleasure.

Wiggins - BroncoIt's Better in Leather
by Cathy Wiggins

Quilting Leather? Who knew?
Cathy Wiggins has taken quilting to an entirely new level with the use of leather as a medium in this exhibit of her latest works. Cathy uses cowhides, deerskins, hair-on hides and even python skins to create her beautiful leather art. She layers them, quilts them and finishes them using dyes, paints, hand-stitching, and embellishments, creating pieces that are reminiscent of the hand-tooled leather, armored shields, dragons and more. Come explore this new world of quilting leather.

It's Better in Leather is generously sponsored by Olde City Quilts

Patchwork Obsessions,
Playing with Color & LineScott Murkin and quilts

by Scott Murkin

When people see Scott’s work they often wonder if it could really all have come from the same person. His style could generously be called “try stuff and see what happens”. Scott gets inspiration from everything in his environment, both at home, and on his travels. He favors traditional geometric piecing, but will use any technique that will result in the look he is trying to achieve—strip piecing, foundation piecing, improvisational piecing, appliqué by hand or machine, thread painting and any and all surface design techniques. This exhibit features all newer works of Scott's, giving a peek into what quilting byways he’s been traveling since his last exhibit at MQX New England in 2013.

Scott is also the MQX Friday Night Dinner special guest speaker. Join us for a great evening!

National Park Quilts
The National Parks Quilts
curated by Donna Marcinkowski-DeSoto

Generously sponsored by A-1 Quilting Machines

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016, 148 fiber artists created original art quilts to depict landscapes, flora and fauna of the 59 National Parks. All 177 quilts of this traveling exhibit will be shown at MQX.

The Visual Spectrum by Heidi ZielinskiHeidi Zielinski 2

This exhibit is a series of 12 small art quilts based on the 12 colors of the color wheel. Visible light is the only part of the Electromagnetic Spectrum that the human eye can see. In this series each wedge of the color wheel is represented with a 12”x12” abstract art quilt in a collage style with many of them including hand embroidery and beading. Each piece is an integral part of the group as well as being an individual and dynamic piece of art on its own.

Alfred Shaheen Vintage Panels

Shaheen Panels 2

Elvis Blue HawaiiRemember Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii album?
The Hawaiian shirt Elvis is wearing was designed by Alfred Shaheen. This timeframe is known as the beginning of the Hawaiian fashion craze with Alfred Shaheen considered the father of the Hawaiian fashion industry.

For MQX, what began as a shared picture on Facebook is now a much anticipated exhibit at MQX New England. Longtime MQX vendor, Christian Lane Quilters, has featured the Shaheen panels for several years and when MQX Founders, Janet-Lee and Mary learned more about their history they were inspired to create this exhibit. The panels are 24" × 44" and have been made into wall quilts by quilters from all over the country with a wide range of quilting experience. Several garments will also be displayed with the exhibit. Christian Lane Quilters has asked for, and received, the blessing of Alfred Shaheen’s daughter for this exhibit at MQX.

If you would like to be part of this exhibit, panels may be purchased from Christian Lane Quilters, Ebay and Etsy.

Once you have obtained your panel, please join the MQX Shaheen Facebook page.

To enter your panel, please click here for the Competition Form. If you would like your panel judged, enter it into one of the regular competition categories and check the "yes" box for judging. If you would prefer to simply be part of the display, in the category menu, select the "Alfred Shaheen Special Exhibit" and "no" for judging.

Don't hesitate to contact Janet-Lee for category guidance.
