    With:   Lisa Sipes

It's no secret that the largest challenge of quilting for hire is getting tops that leave a bit to be desired. Lisa has seen it all! Throw out your starch and steamer, and learn to "fix" those quilts on your own. In this class Lisa will demonstrate how she works her magic to ease in fullness, straighten crooked seams, etc. We will begin with loading techniques to help you keep the quilt top square and work all the way through choosing quilting designs and motifs that work the best for poorly pieced tops that need a little extra love. The goal is for you to leave this class with tips, tricks and the courage to undertake just about anything a customer might throw your way. This class is for everyone but to receive the most benefit you should be willing to work from the front of your machine.

These designs are not for the faint of heart. In fact it usually takes a while for someone to figure out how you did them. I take a background filler stencil such as crosshatching. Clamshell, or clouds and use it as a guide for freemotion. It is such a cool concept. Background designs such as interlocking circles, twist, flaming clamshells all become easy and unique. The really cool thing about this class is every time I teach it the students come up with even more ideas. Let me introduce you to this technique and see what wonderous things you can imagine.

W425-13 Expressive Unmarked Free Motion Quilting
    With:   Robbi Eklow

Sample: Robbi Eklow for Expressive Unmarked Free Motion QuiltingRobbi makes art quilts with fusible applique and then quilts them extensively to hold the pieces in place and to decorate the surface. Her favorite motifs are small in scale, meant to fill small spaces, but adaptable to larger spaces like backgrounds and borders. She doesn't do feathers very often, preferring variations of geometric forms such as spirals, triangles, squares and circles, as well as organic forms such as leaves and flowers. Because she does no marking, the forms are repeated but never identical, always changing and fluid. Consistent stitch length is desirable but not mandatory, she is more concerned with getting a smooooth flowy line when she stitches. If you have never free motion quilted or have been uncomfortable in the past, this is a great class to get you started. If you have only free motion quilted with pantographs and premarked patterns, this class will help you think about your quilting in a new way. Ideas from this class can be used on both a domestic machine and a longarm. We'll be practicing on inexpensive felt rectangles in the morning, switching to muslin sandwiches in the afternoon.
