MQX Updates & 2011 Show Information

It's nice to be back after a short break. It doesn't take long to get back into the swing of things though. Even during our time off, our phone conversations are laced with new ideas to improve the show and to make it the enjoyable experience you have come to expect. Considering the monumental amount of work to put on one show, we're preparing ourselves for double duty with TWO MQX shows in 2011!
MQX Merchandise Summer Sale - After the merchandise booth at the show was cleaned out of "Quilting Queen" and "Machine Quilting Queen" denim shirts we have reordered and they are now back in stock. There are also fleece vests, sweatshirts, mugs, etc. Take a look at MQX Merchandise online to get your own MQXWear! Receive a 15% discount on all things MQX by entering SUM2010 in the coupon section. Coupon expires at midnight, August 31st. Quantities and sizes are somewhat limited. Sorry, no backorders.
MQX Newsletter Options - This MQX Newsletter is being distributed to everyone on our subscriber list and has information on both MQX East and MQX West. At this time, please go to the Newsletter Subscription page to update your preferences. You may select which newsletter (MQX East or MQX West) you would like to receive.
Should you want to receive both newsletters, you may elect to do so by checking both. Although there will always be a little overlap, starting in the fall, we will begin separating out show specific information into individual newsletters. There is always an unsubscribe option at the bottom of each newsletter...... but we hope you won't do that! :)
Don't miss out on any important MQX information. Update your newsletter preferences today!
MQX Website - Well, not a new website but certainly a new look! With two shows, visitors will be able to select the specific show they are interested in learning more about. This revamp will take place over the summer and be ready for fall class registrations.
Looking back on MQX 2010.................
It was scary to move a show the size of MQX. When a show moves to a new venue, success is not a sure thing..... and be assured that we were reminded of that possibility by many. We have been pleased (and relieved) to receive many compliments on the new location.
Of course, to a certain degree, we are all resistant to change. This move to Providence was a big change and resulted in a few bugs to work out. The Lecture Stage was a huge success so it will definitely make a comeback. The Make & Take area area was moderately successful so we are not sure we'll do that again. We received great feedback from vendors on the easier load in/load out; compared to Manchester, it was a breeze.
One standout comment came from Ron Parker, Gammill CEO and MQX Corporate Gold Sponsor, "MQX has made the move to a great new venue in Rhode Island without a hitch. Only Janet-Lee and Mary could have pulled this off in such a short period of time. I'm impressed." Knowing that Ron doesn't dole out accolades easily, his compliment is greatly appreciated.
We would like to take a moment to thank our generous sponsors, teachers, vendors, volunteers, students and staff for making MQX an enjoyable experience for so many. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone that contributed their time and energy to help us create a show to be proud of. You are our co-workers, friends and colleagues. We are humbled by the support, commitment and confidence you have placed in us. Thank you.
We saw a slight uptick in student registrations in 2010 to 1296. Complimented by 8 bus tours, paid attendance was up to over 4100 (these are individual paid admissions, not how many times each person walked through the gate and does not include registered students). MQX hired 41 teachers and the vendor mall was filled with 73 great vendors. The floor plan will undergo a bit of a revamp and we are selling our wooden quilt racks since, from hereon out, we will use pipe and drape to showcase all quilts. Inquiries about the racks may be directed to Janet-Lee at 866-675-4355 or by e-mail.

.................... and now, looking forward to 2011

Special Exhibits for MQX East 2011:
"The Quilt Show" - a 30" x 108" quilt depicting how we look standing in front of an aisle of stunning quilts at a quilt show. Thank you to creator Laura Peterson of LaQuinta, California for allowing MQX to show this wonderful piece at both MQX East and MQX West in 2011.
"Pretty as a Picture" - a juried exhibit of Portrait quilts. Cathy Wiggins will curate this exhibit for MQX East. The online submission form will be available on the MQX website in late summer.
Artist Showcase
MQX is honored to have two immensely talented machine quilters as featured artists. Linda McCuean is an award winning, masterpiece machine quilter, teacher and Certified Quilt Judge who will showcase her broad range of work at MQX East 2011. Linda has won national awards across the country (including 2006's $100,000 Quilting Challenge), is a well respected Certified Quilt Judge (including MQX in 2010 and 2011) and she shares her talent by teaching at various shows. This is a not-to-be-missed exhibit. Thank you Linda!
Cindy Needham has been a much-in-demand teacher at MQX for the last two years. Her transformation of antique linens into stunning quilts is nothing short of jaw dropping. Cindy's "The Legacy of Linen" exhibit will show the transformation process as well as many pieces of her work. When she isn't teaching during MQX, she will be at her display answering questions. Thank you Cindy for sharing your wealth of knowledge!
Charlotte Angotti
MQX is pleased to announce that Charlotte Angotti will be the special guest teacher and banquet speaker at MQX East 2011. We have been trying to work out dates to have her at MQX for a few years but scheduling conflicts prevented her from joining us. "Known for her humor, her way with fabric/color and her pre-cut kits, Charlotte believes her hobby is quilt making and her job is teaching others to enjoy it as much as she does." (quoted from Charlotte's "About Me" page) Check out her site!
Quilt Competition Information will be available online when the Class & Event Catalog is distributed in early fall. Now is the time to start thinking about your entry.
Hotel Information - detailed information on each property is available on the Travel & Lodging page on the MQX website. MQX is speaking with other properties in the downtown area. Should we contract with additional properties, we will add them to the website.
- The Westin Providence Hotel - MQX has again selected The Westin as the 2011 convention hotel. We have negotiated to keep the rate of $149 for single and double occupancy. Additionally, ALL MQX guests will receive complimentary, high-speed internet service as part of each reservation.
- The Hilton Providence - The Hilton Hotel, located on the other side of the convention center will have a room block for MQX which will also include complimentary, high-speed internet service as part of the room reservation. We have negotiated a better rate of $129 (last spring it was $149) for single and double occupancy.
MQX WEST 2011
October 11-16, 2011 Oregon Convention Center Portland, Oregon
There is much anticipation for MQX West. After searching for almost four years for the perfect venue, we are happy to have found a home in Portland. Now the work begins! We are happy that Portland didn't have space for us until 2011 as it has given us the time needed to work out the logistics. We are excited, exhilarated and a little bit scared. Hotel information will be available in the fall about the same time the website is upgraded.
2011 Class Proposals - As indicated in the MQX East section above, the Class Proposal Form is online and ready for class submissions. Even though MQX West is over a year away, we are still accepting class submissions. The deadline will be February 1, 2011.
Special Exhibits for MQX West 2011
"Cover to Cover" Book Club Quilters will honor us with an impressive display of their book club quilts. This group of women have been gathering for a number of years to review books with many creating their impression of a book (or books) in fabric. They are excited to be part of MQX's debut in Portland and we are happy be on the receiving end of their enthusiasm for MQX West..
"Quilting in the Family" - a juried display of quilts honoring the many women who have passed on their love of fabric and quilting to the next generation. This exhibit will not be exclusive to only mothers and daughters but open to grandmothers/granddaughters, mothers/sons, aunt/niece ........ you get the idea. Is there someone in your life that you've passed the love of fabric to or was your grandmother the person who taught you to quilt? Submit your quilt, their quilt and the story of how you have inspired each other. The online submission form will be available on the MQX website in the fall. Keep an eye out for it.
"The Quilt Show" - a 30" x 108" quilt depicting how we all look standing in front of an aisle of stunning quilts at a quilt show. Thank you to creator Laura Peterson of LaQuinta, California for allowing MQX to show this wonderful piece at both MQX East and MQX West in 2011.
Mark Lipinski
We are beyond thrilled to have our good friend, Mark Lipinski as the the MQX West 2011 special guest banquet speaker and teacher. Mark's real life lecture is hilariously funny and had us all laughing ourselves silly at MQX 2009. He is a delightful, lighthearted teacher whose mystery classes fill within minutes. What a treat to have him join us in Portland.
Mark is the Executive Editor for Mark Lipinski's Fabric Trends for Quilters, Mark Lipinski's Christmas 365, and two new, yet to be released magazines; Mark Lipinski's Create and Mark Lipinski's Machine Quilting Annual. All are publications from All American Crafts.
