Supply List:

 

Rotary cutter and mat

Ruler

Exacto knife w/ fresh blade

Appliqué Press Sheet – large (about 13” x 17”)

Pencils – #2 HB and/or fine point permanent marker

Scissors – paper & fabric (large & small)

Iron & ironing surface (board or mat) - MQX will have a limited number of irons and ironing surfaces available.

Extension cord/power bar – MQX will supply.

Masking tape

Paper towels

Clear plastic wrap, such as Saran (about 32” long)

 

Materials Needed:

 

Heron

Head/neck – 1/4-yard

Crown fringe and wing accent – scraps

Eye, eye shadow – scraps, black pupil, yellow/gold iris, and cool color for shadow shape

Beak – scrap

Wing fringe and main mass – 2 fabrics, 1/4-yard of each

Lower body, wing accent, and crown shadow -- 1/4-yard

Iris

Petals & buds – 2 fabrics, scraps or 1/4-yard of each

Petal in shadow – pink scrap

Beards – gold scraps

Stems & leaves – 1/4-yard

Leaf masses – 3 fabrics, largest 1/2-yard

Background – 3/4 to 1 yard

Backing fabric – 3/4-yard

Batting: 3/4-yard (or piece approx. 25” x 41”)

Binding: 1/4-yard

Fusible Web: 2½-yards

Foil – “Iridescent” (source: www.lauramurraydesigns.com )

Bo-Nash foil bonding agent (source: www.quiltingarts.com )

Shiva Artist’s Paintstik – (MQX students will be able to use my Paintstiks during class)

 

Notes:

  • Please bring Wonder Under for your fusible or if you prefer another type, be very familiar with its use.
  • Prewash the background fabric, but don’t cut to size until later.
  • You will be doing a Paintstik rubbing from my hand-carved stamp.
  • Scrap sizes are minimum sizes, bring larger pieces if you want to “fussy cut” for specific color and value placement.
  • When in doubt, bring extra fabric choices. More is better!
  • Sewing machines will not be needed.
  • Foil and Bo-Nash use will be demonstrated, but these products won’t be needed during the workshop.
