Quilted EMBrace

MQX is pleased to present Quilted EMBrace as our charity for the 2016 and 2017 shows.

Join MQX and Linda Thielfoldt in covering our seniors with a hug, one quilt at a time.

After an incredibly successful two-year commitment to Quilts of Valor, MQX Quilt Festivals has chosen Quilted EMbrace as our charity for 2016 and 2017. Please join us for this worthy cause.

How did Quilted EMbrace come about? After visiting her special needs sister, Em, in a nursing home every day for the last 6 weeks of her life, Linda Thielfoldt saw how many senior citizens live the last years of their life. Having outlived most of their friends and with no local family, many of these residents are isolated and lonely. After bringing EM a small quilt made with a Minkee backing and a perfect size for her wheelchair, the idea dawned on her to launch a non-profit in EM’s honor. After making a few of these ‘wheelchair size’ quilts with friends, Linda saw the joy the small quilts brought to residents with several brought to tears that a total stranger would go to such an effort.

Did you know these staggering statistics? Approximately 1.3 million people receive care each day in over 15,500 nursing homes in the United States. Of those, approximately 60% are women and 40% are men. Seniors 75 and older represent 4% of the population.

The mission of Quilted EMbrace is to provide comfort and support to Senior Citizens living in nursing homes, many of whom are forgotten or alone, through the gift of a handmade quilt. MQX is proud to partner with Quilted EMbrace to help facilitate that… but we need your help!

What’s the goal? The goal is 36" × 48" completed quilts or quilt tops. They may be any type of block or quilt design as long as they meet the preferred wheelchair size of 36" × 48". The small size makes them manageable for contributors and are the preferred size for sitting in a chair or wheelchair. Quilts are needed for both genders.

How can you help? Make some blocks — only six, 12-inch blocks are required (2 blocks wide by 3 blocks high), — add a 6 inch border, quilt it in a simple all-over design and you’re done!

Where, When and How?? Below are several PDF’s of patterns which may be downloaded by individuals or groups. Please consider getting your sewing group or local guild involved as well.

Quilted EMBrace has an active Facebook page too. It is a closed group.... simply ask for membership to share your quilts, patterns and experiences.

Quilts will be collected at either the MQX show booth or MQX Merchandise booth in Springfield (just inside the Plaza Exhibit Hall) and at the Friday Night Dinner on Friday, September 29th. They may also be mailed to MQX EMBrace, P.O. Box 490, Hampton Falls, NH 03844.
